LITTLE HERO

Stand on the highway so wide
I couldn’t look back if I tried
For all my hard living, I’m still unforgiven
I’ve got to keep all my glory inside
And all I can do is sit helplessly through
Repeating "I won’t be denied"

Gazed at the sky as it grew
Enveloped the midnight in blue
Hypnotic soft violet, entrancing and silent
A lullaby-lavender hue
And the gentle breeze lifts, but my eyes won’t shift
Because all I can think of is you

Lie in the grass that was green
Lie in the arms of a queen
The clear river chuckled as tales unbuckled
The best things we hadn’t yet seen
And I never did feel anything quite so real
No words can relate what I mean

Stand in the rain all alone
Tin roofs are all overblown
I long for the shelter I felt when I held her
The kind that don’t come on its own
With a fingertip touch she unraveled so much
Like nothing I’ve ever been shown

Listen for the southbound train
To howl through the hammering rain
A harmonica’s whistle as lonesome as this
Will send shivers cold up to my brain
But I can’t hear that sound and the rain it just pounds
Its lonesome blue rhythm in vain

Walking and wondering why
No matter how hard I might try
The sound of her laughter will haunt me hereafter
It’s something I can’t justify
And her beautiful smile in my head all the while
Makes me want to go down and die

I wish there was something to mend
I’m trying my best to pretend
That I wasn’t there for you, that I never cared for you
And that there’s nothing to end
But each moment apart is like a nail in my heart
hat’s
That’s hammered again and again
